About Lake Charles, Louisiana | Highway Ford
Highway Ford is proud to serve the City of Lake Charles, Louisiana. Known unofficially as the “Festival Capital of Louisiana,” Lake Charles is a fun and exciting place that knows how to celebrate its history and culture.
1911 Historic City Hall
Lake Charles was founded in 1861 as Charleston, but was renamed in 1867 to what it is known as today. One of the biggest disasters in Lake Charles history is the Great Fire of 1910. It destroyed much of the city and although no lives were lost, it made many people homeless. During the fire many important building were ruined as well, such as the Courthouse, the Catholic Church, and even City Hall.
One year after the tragic event, City Hall was rebuilt better than the original and named the 1911 Historic City Hall. This building functioned as a government building until 2004 when it was renovated and reopened as an Arts and Cultural Center to commemorate the tragic fire and celebrate other important historical events of Lake Charles.
Another part of Lake Charles’ history that is remembered by celebration is the Contraband Days Festival. This two-week long festival celebrates the legend of the Pirate Jean Lafitte, who allegedly has buried treasure in the Contraband Bayou. Pirate Jean Lafitte is famous for not only his pirating activities in the Gulf of Mexico, but also for aiding Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. Despite being a Pirate, Jean Lafitte helped to protect the town and its people.
To kick-start the Contraband Days and celebrate Pirate Jean Lafitte, the citizens in Lake Charles begin the festivities with a kidnapping of the city’s mayor. The mayor is then put on trial and forced to “walk the plank!” This starting event would include a “Jean Lafitte”, some city militia and of course the mayor of the city dressed in costume to make the celebration come to life!
The state of Louisiana is known for its festival and fairs. The culture surrounding the area celebrates Mardi Gras, not as just another day on the calendar, but as a celebrated holiday season which everyone gets to join the festivities. Lake Charles, which is known as the “Festival Capital of Louisiana”, is no exception to this culturally accepted tradition of the “Cajun Country.” In Lake Charles, Mardi Gras is widely celebrated and in order to prepare and make Mardi Gras more exciting, the city has over 60 Krewes (organizations that help organize Mardi Gras events) to assist in making the event spectacular!
In addition to Mardi Gras, Lake Charles has more than 75 fairs and festivals that celebrate everything from the towns’ history and culture, to having events just to indulge in the food and music of the area. Just a few of the major festivals celebrated in this city are the Black Heritage Festival, Cajun Music and Food Festival, and of course the Contraband Days Pirate Festival!
Another exciting aspect of Lake Charles is the Casino Life, and the different venues for finding the casinos. From boats to hotels, racetracks to standalone casino buildings, Lake Charles offers a variety of settings to partake in the casino lifestyle. Some of the biggest casinos are the Golden Nugget, the Isle of Capri Casino Hotel, the Delta Downs Racetrack Casino and Hotel, and perhaps the most popular; the L’Auberge Du Lac Casino Resort.
